University Writing

Definition/Purpose

Writing Across the Curriculum

Writing across the curriculum (WAC) means that BYU faculty make a concerted effort to elicit and teach writing in ALL disciplines, not just in the English Department. This effort is based on the belief that all faculty have to be responsible for developing the writing (and speaking) ability of students in all courses.

If students are expected to perform well in writing tasks in all of their classes, they will take seriously to the task of learning to write, and they will become more proficient by virtue of practice. The Office of Undergraduate Education seeks to foster the preparation of faculty and teaching assistants, so that they will be better prepared to teach and evaluate writing in all courses, not just general education courses. Many programs and resources are offered to help with such faculty development.
