How to Apply to Writing Fellows
- Application: Download the application from this website. Be aware of the minimum requirements: 3.3 cumulative GPA or above, at least one year of college experience and full-time student status.
- Preparation: Don't go into the application process blindly -- read the description of the Writing Fellows program on the Writing Fellows homepage. Understand the objectives of the program as well as what will be required of you. Make sure you will have the time to fulfill the obligations that come with being a Writing Fellow.
- Orientation Meeting: Try to attend the scheduled Orientation Meeting. There you can meet the Writing Fellows Staff and learn more about the program. (Time and date will be on the current application form).
- Cover letter: The cover letter will be the first contact between you and the person reviewing your application. Follow correct business letter format, make it look nice and check for typos. Do your utmost to make sure your letter is free of grammatical errors. Typos and grammatical errors detract from your ethos as someone seriously interested in writing well and helping others write well.
- Writing samples: Submit two writing samples of academic writing (not creative writing). At least one of the papers must be on a topic related to your major. If you have not written papers in your major, submit samples from two different departments. Applicant reviewers must be able to evaluate your aptitude for cogent argument. Remember to include a brief description of the writing prompt (the teacher's instructions) for each paper.
- Teacher recommendation: Remember to inform your teacher that he or she can send a recommendation via email to beth_hedengren@byu.edu. We are especially interested in knowing about your writing skills, your ability to work with others and your work ethic.
- Schedule an Interview. When you submit your application, sign up for an interview time. Remember to schedule the time in your planner. Forgetting the appointment or being late for it will not reflect well on you.
