For Students: Training Programs

Writing  Fellow Training

Writing and Pedagogy (Honors 300R)
All Writing Fellows are required to take this rigorous training course the first semester they work as tutors. The three-credit course is designed to improve skills and knowledge in writing, analysis of writing and tutoring. Students read extensively on writing pedagogy, analyze a variety of student papers and practice tutoring techniques. In the process of writing three researched-based papers on aspects of writing and teaching, the tutors apply a variety of good writing strategies, which they then feel more confident to teach others.  The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:35-2:50 p.m.

Continuing Writing Fellows Training
After their first semester, Writing Fellows continue their training by participating in at least three one-hour training workshops, attending general staff meetings and completing one of three program contribution options. The three main objectives of this continued training are logistical coordination of the Writing Fellows program, further study of tutoring skills, and in-service opportunities for the Writing Fellows. In this way, experienced Fellows have a chance to continue developing their ability as writing tutors.

Training Retreats
Each semester all Writing Fellows participate in a weekend training workshop. Experienced Fellows make presentations on aspects of Fellowing, and the coordinators also address particular concerns of the program at this time.  This extended workshop lasts about 4 hours on a Saturday near the beginning of the semester. The Fellows are paid for their participation in this, as well as other in-service training activities. (Of course, the Fellows are not paid for their participation in the training class. For that they receive university credit.)
